I am coming off a work week of utter chaos, which left me with zero energy to accomplish anything personally. In the middle of considering contingency plans for work operations, it dawned on me that I should have those same plans in place for myself personally! I mean, why didn’t I think about it before!?
Work demanded so much of my energy, I had to put most of my other obligations to the back burner. This left me feeling crappy, especially about missing my exercise regiments. Is it horrible that I didn’t feel as bad about not being able to cook dinner or give my kids the attention they usually get from me?
Contingencies are “plan-B’s” we have in place to ensure minimal effect to our bottom line. When it comes to our personal and professional lives and us juggles those components simultaneously, creating smart contingencies are all the more vital. There are a four major reason why contingencies are important are:
- Contingencies minimizes loss. If you have coping mechanisms in place as contingency plans the odd of falling off the wagon is mitigated versus not having a plan in place to lean on.
- Contingencies eliminate panic. Well, we all can agree that when “it” hits the fan, if we have no other alternative, the one thing we all do is panic and get just a bit anxious don’t we? The results of this is us giving up or putting those goals so far back that it’s almost impossible to pick it back up.
- Contingency plans should be comprehensive. What does this mean? Well, we should develop plans that encompasses all factors of our operation versus just one target. An example of this, me having to deal with fires at work, thus developing plans that supports my health and wellness while being able to meet my obligations to the kids and our home. Everything we focus on, will have an effect on something else. Having a clear directive and understanding of everything we have to deal with, will ensure our plans are comprehensive and hits each target to some degree, allowing for some rate of efficiency. Remember, it’s not about perfection…it’s about progress!
- Don’t wait! We can’t allow ourselves to wait until something happens to then develop a back up plan. Do it now, so when life does occur(believe me it will), you’ll be ready and nimble!
So, the next time you’re feeling like you’ve been hit with the Mac truck otherwise known as life, be sure you have a plan in place to dedicate your energy, no matter how small to one of your goals. You’ve got this!
